‘Hope’ is the main ingredient in our life trajectory! It is originating in basic ‘Trust’ in everything around. And Trust it is… in our surrounding niches, that assures a safety net from fear of basic survival.
The primordial ‘Self’ first overcomes fear of mortality as such — and then through ‘Will’ finds initiatives and purpose.
| Age | Conflict | Important Events | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infancy (birth–18 mo) | Trust vs. Mistrust | Feeding | Hope |
| Early Childhood (2–3 yrs) | Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt | Toilet Training | Will |
| Preschool (3–5 yrs) | Initiative vs. Guilt | Exploration | Purpose |
| School Age (6–11 yrs) | Industry vs. Inferiority | School | Confidence |
| Adolescence (12–18 yrs) | Identity vs. Role Confusion | Social Relationships | Fidelity |
| Young Adulthood (19–40 yrs) | Intimacy vs. Isolation | Relationships | Love |
| Middle Adulthood (40–65 yrs) | Generativity vs. Stagnation | Work & Parenthood | Care |
| Maturity (65–death) | Ego Integrity vs. Despair | Reflection on Life | Wisdom |
From here, the nascent Self has defined its role in Fidelity, Love, Care and “knowing Wisdom.” Cognitive development is outlined by Erikson, Piaget, Freud, and so many more — all explained in their ways; but the common outcome can be seen so visually in Maslow’s Triangle. Self progresses…
| Stage | Age Range | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Sensorimotor | 0–2 years | Coordination of senses with motor responses. Object permanence developed. Language used for demands. |
| Preoperational | 2–7 years | Symbolic thinking, proper syntax. Imagination and intuition strong. Conservation developed. |
| Concrete Operational | 7–11 years | Concepts attached to concrete situations. Time, space, and quantity understood and applied. |
| Formal Operational | 11+ years | Theoretical, hypothetical thinking. Abstract logic and reasoning. Strategy and planning. |
From survival, fear, love, care — to reach Wisdom, Self-actualisation and fulfilment.
Along this ladder of life comes the need to navigate the Reality Principle with delayed gratifications, overcoming the pull of the Pleasure Principle.
This grand design of life offers the Self to attain Wisdom and Peace — learning mindful meditations, concentration by practice of focused attention and open monitoring.
All of these have mostly one basic code:
All along these ascending ladder steps, our Hope and Will drives us onward…
Realisation: “Infinite occurrences of the universe cannot be fathomed by the finite human mind.”
There is a greater reality than you perceive. Surrender. ‘Trust’ unconditionally — even in the absence of evidence — to the Truth of the Cosmos and ‘Hope’.
In humility, there is Faith. When there is Faith, there is no ‘Fear’. That is the ultimate pinnacle — the top.
